Project Context and Overview

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation technologies is transforming the global labor market. As machines and algorithms increasingly perform tasks once handled by humans, traditional job structures are being reshaped. Repetitive and predictable work is especially vulnerable, while new roles requiring advanced digital and cognitive skills are emerging. These changes are not just technological—they bring significant social implications such as rising inequality, employment displacement, and uncertainty about the future of work.

 

In response to these evolving dynamics, our team, Neon Echoes, developed an interactive media project titled “Future Unemployment Guide.” Built using Twine, a narrative-based platform, this project explores the intersection of AI and employment through a speculative yet immersive experience. Rather than simply presenting facts, we designed a simulation where users step into the shoes of future job seekers navigating AI-led hiring processes. The goal is to deepen public understanding of how AI might alter recruitment systems and challenge traditional perceptions of employability.

 

Participants begin by choosing from six future-relevant professions—driver, customer service representative, host, programmer, content editor, and translator—each selected based on current AI development trends and predictions about automation. For every role, the system provides three résumés of varying quality, representing different skill levels. Users then participate in mock interviews, during which their responses are secretly scored by an algorithm operating behind the scenes. This hidden scoring system mimics the opaque evaluation processes of real-world AI recruitment tools, adding a layer of realism and introspection to the experience.

 

To enhance visual engagement, the interface adopts a dark blue, tech-inspired aesthetic that reflects a futuristic and intelligent atmosphere. Beyond interaction, the project incorporates data visualizations to highlight how various industries are affected by automation—showing which sectors face the greatest risks, what new jobs may arise, and what skills will be most valuable in the coming decades.

 

Ultimately, Future Unemployment Guide aims not to spark fear, but to encourage awareness and critical thinking. By simulating a near-future AI employment system, the project invites users to reflect on their potential role in a shifting workforce. It also emphasizes the importance of adaptability and lifelong learning in an era where machines are not just tools—but active participants in decision-making processes that shape human livelihoods.
